A huge variety of applications and services are expected to appear, propelled by a number of factors: The falling costs of interconnection modules. The increasing interest in the technology and the commercial opportunities it creates. And, of course, the growing revenue potential for all players involved.
Machine-to-machine, or M2M, services, include areas like smart metering for homes and cities, remote monitoring forpersonal healthcare, automotive analytics and vehicle
tracking, along with the preventive and proactive
maintenance of all kinds of technologies. Since mobility, besides the interconnection itself, is at the heart of the M2M concept, there is enormous opportunity for telecommunication operators, especially mobile ones, to prove they are more than just data pipes.
Because of the need for great skills in systems integration, diagnostics, analytics, billing, testing and data protocols, Celfocus believes that, hand in hand with the telecommunications industry, it has an important role to play in this area. The key factor for success will be a total share of the opportunity: risk, manpower, investment and revenue.
This wave could represent as much as 3% of the present total telecommunications market. Of course it’s a great opportunity, but also a big challenge, for which there won’t be a single answer: the competitive edge will result from many small and smart solutions.
